    Current oscillations in a metallic ring threaded by a time-dependent magnetic flux

    We study a mesoscopic metallic ring threaded by a magnetic flux which varies linearly in time PhiM(t)=Phi t with a formalism based in Baym-Kadanoff-Keldysh non-equilibrium Green functions. We propose a method to calculate the Green functions in real space and we consider an experimental setup to investigate the dynamics of the ring by recourse to a transport experiment. This consists in a single lead connecting the ring to a particle reservoir. We show that different dynamical regimes are attained depending on the ratio hbar Phi/Phi0 W, being Phi0=h c/e and W, the bandwidth of the ring. For moderate lengths of the ring, a stationary regime is achieved for hbar Phi/Phi0 >W. In the opposite case with hbar Phi/Phi0 < W, the effect of Bloch oscillations driven by the induced electric field manifests itself in the transport properties of the system. In particular, we show that in this time-dependent regime a tunneling current oscillating in time with a period tau=2piPhi0/Phi can be measured in the lead. We also analyze the resistive effect introduced by inelastic scattering due to the coupling to the external reservoir.Comment: 17 pages, 13 figure

    Diel 'tuning' of coral metabolism: physiological responses to light cues

    Hermatypic-zooxanthellate corals track the diel patterns of the main environmental parameters temperature, UV and visible light - by acclimation processes that include biochemical responses. The diel course of solar radiation is followed by photosynthesis rates and thereby elicits simultaneous changes in tissue oxygen tension due to the shift in photosynthesis/respiration balance. The recurrent patterns of sunlight are reflected in fluorescence yields, photosynthetic pigment content and activity of the two protective enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), enzymes that are among the universal defenses against free radical damage in living tissue. All of these were investigated in three scleractinian corals: Favia favus, Plerogyra sinuosa and Goniopora lobata. The activity of SOD and CAT in the animal host followed the course of solar radiation, increased with the rates of photosynthetic oxygen production and was correlated with a decrease in the maximum quantum yield of photochemistry in Photosystem H (PSII) (Delta F'/F-m'). SOD and CAT activity in the symbiotic algae also exhibited a light intensity correlated pattern, albeit a less pronounced one. The observed rise of the free-radical-scavenger enzymes, with a time scale of minutes to several hours, is an important protective mechanism for the existence and remarkable success of the unique cnidarian-dinoflagellate associations, in which photosynthetic oxygen production takes place within animal cells. This represents a facet of the precarious act of balancing the photosynthetic production of oxygen by the algal symbionts with their destructive action on all living cells, especially those of the animal host

    Kondo effect in systems with dynamical symmetries

    This paper is devoted to a systematic exposure of the Kondo physics in quantum dots for which the low energy spin excitations consist of a few different spin multiplets ∣SiMi>|S_{i}M_{i}>. Under certain conditions (to be explained below) some of the lowest energy levels ESiE_{S_{i}} are nearly degenerate. The dot in its ground state cannot then be regarded as a simple quantum top in the sense that beside its spin operator other dot (vector) operators Rn{\bf R}_{n} are needed (in order to fully determine its quantum states), which have non-zero matrix elements between states of different spin multiplets ≠0 \ne 0. These "Runge-Lenz" operators do not appear in the isolated dot-Hamiltonian (so in some sense they are "hidden"). Yet, they are exposed when tunneling between dot and leads is switched on. The effective spin Hamiltonian which couples the metallic electron spin s{\bf s} with the operators of the dot then contains new exchange terms, Jns⋅RnJ_{n} {\bf s} \cdot {\bf R}_{n} beside the ubiquitous ones Jis⋅SiJ_{i} {\bf s}\cdot {\bf S}_{i}. The operators Si{\bf S}_{i} and Rn{\bf R}_{n} generate a dynamical group (usually SO(n)). Remarkably, the value of nn can be controlled by gate voltages, indicating that abstract concepts such as dynamical symmetry groups are experimentally realizable. Moreover, when an external magnetic field is applied then, under favorable circumstances, the exchange interaction involves solely the Runge-Lenz operators Rn{\bf R}_{n} and the corresponding dynamical symmetry group is SU(n).     Hard Instances of the Constrained Discrete Logarithm Problem

    The discrete logarithm problem (DLP) generalizes to the constrained DLP, where the secret exponent xx belongs to a set known to the attacker. The complexity of generic algorithms for solving the constrained DLP depends on the choice of the set. Motivated by cryptographic applications, we study sets with succinct representation for which the constrained DLP is hard. We draw on earlier results due to Erd\"os et al. and Schnorr, develop geometric tools such as generalized Menelaus' theorem for proving lower bounds on the complexity of the constrained DLP, and construct sets with succinct representation with provable non-trivial lower bounds

    From Tomonaga-Luttinger to Fermi liquid in transport through a tunneling barrier

    Finite length of a one channel wire results in crossover from a Tomonaga-Luttinger to Fermi liquid behavior with lowering energy scale. In condition that voltage drop (V)(V) mostly occurs across a tunnel barrier inside the wire we found coefficients of temperature/voltage expansion of low energy conductance as a function of constant of interaction, right and left traversal times. At higher voltage the finite length contribution exhibits oscillations related to both traversal times and becomes a slowly decaying correction to the scale-invariant V1/g−1V^{1/g-1} dependence of the conductance.Comment: 12 pages of RevTex file and 1 PS file figur

    Is there a d.c. Josephson Effect in Bilayer Quantum Hall Systems?

    We argue on the basis of phenomenological and microscopic considerations that there is no d.c. Josephson effect in ordered bilayer quantum Hall systems, even at T=0. Instead the tunnel conductance is strongly enhanced, approaching a finite value proportional to the square of the order parameter as the interlayer tunneling amplitude vanishes.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    Jewish Immigrants in Israel: Disintegration Within Integration?

    In her chapter, ‘Disintegration within integration’, Amandine Desille examines more recent transformations of Israel’s Law of Return – the Israeli immigration policy which provides the (imagined) repatriation of Diaspora Jews to Israel – in a context of liberalisation of the Israeli economy and the devolution of power to local authorities. Today, new immigrants follow two paths of ‘integration’: ‘direct absorp-tion’, where immigrants are granted benefits while being free to settle wherever they find fit; and ‘community absorption’, where immigrants are placed in ‘absorption centres’ and see their entitlements conditioned by residence, religious observance and more. Those two paths are ‘ethnicised’ in the sense that they depend on country of origin – Western immigrants, considered as economically useful, benefit from direct absorption and a more pluralist attitude of local governments, while immi-grants from Africa and Asia are the objects of an assimilationist policy. This situa-tion of ‘(dis)integration’ within what is supposed to be an inclusive immigrant policy for all Jews, shows the extent to which new criteria of perceived economic performance limit the integration of specific segments of newcomers. The rescaling of immigration and immigrant policies to subnational governments, although it has introduced a more multicultural approach, antagonist to the assimilationist ideology at work in Israel, has not enabled an alternative policy framework which is more accommodating to all.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
